Councilmember Fielkow Honors the late Dave Dixon
for his Contributions to the Who Dat Nation
July 25, 2011 – New Orleans, LA – An Ordinance, co-authored by City Council Vice-President Arnie Fielkow, to rename a part of Girod Street between LaSalle Street and West Stadium Drive to Dave Dixon Drive will be filed at the August 4 City Council meeting. This segment of street bordering one side of the Superdome and across from the New Orleans Arena will honor and recognize the late Dave Dixon. His foresight and civic leadership in regards to the construction of the Louisiana Superdome, and the resulting New Orleans Arena and sports and entertainment complex, greatly contributed to the establishment of New Orleans as a world class professional sports city.
The proposed name change would only apply to the municipal address of real property owned and governed by the Louisiana Stadium and Exposition District, whose Board of Commissioners, at Fielkow’s request, have unanimously approved the proposed name change by resolution adopted at its July 20, 2011 meeting. City Planning Commission review, which is expected within 45 days, is required prior to Council action on the Ordinance.
“Mr. Dixon’s contribution to the City, especially to creation of the Poydras corridor, and to the entire Who Dat Nation is immeasurable. Some have calculated that he is responsible for over $4 billion in business stimulated by the creation of a pro-football team and stadium. Aside from the financial gains that the City derived from the Superdome and the Saints franchise, the spirit and soul of the Who Dats are defining assets of the City of New Orleans. The entire nation associates our city with the fleur de lis and our black and gold pride. Naming this segment of the street after him is the most honorable and appropriate way to recognize the value of his significant contributions to our great city,” said Fielkow.
