Council President Fielkow and City Council to Honor
St. Augustine’s State Champion Basketball Team
March 16, 2011 – New Orleans, LA - Before the start of tomorrow’s City Council meeting, the St. Augustine Purple Knights Basketball Team, Head Coach Cliff Barthé, Assistant Coaches and St. Augustine President Reverend John Raphael will be honored for winning the Class 5A state championship. All will receive proclamations from the full City Council at the request of City Council President Arnie Fielkow.
With a score of 67-43, the top-seeded Purple Knights’ victory in the Cajundome over second-seeded Scotland was decisive. Junior guard Javan Felix was voted 5A’s Outstanding Player in the Top 28.
This is the first time since 1999 that the St. Augustine Purple Knights have won a state boys basketball championship, making it the school’s fifth in the Louisiana High School Athletic Association.
“I would like to commend the team, their parents and the coaches for their determination and commitment in winning a state championship for their school and community. Superior athletic performances do not come without hard work, and these young men have proven their resolve to be the best they can be. I have no doubt that this championship season has taught the entire team about leadership, teamwork and responsibility. Their futures on and off the court will forever be enhanced from this extraordinary achievement,” said Council President Fielkow.
