New Orleans, LA – December 16, 2010 -
Helping to ensure that the Hornets remain and are successful in New Orleans, the City Council unanimously passed a resolution today, co-authored by City Council President Arnie Fielkow and all City Councilmembers, urging citizens and businesses of New Orleans and the entire Gulf South region to show their support by buying tickets, merchandise and sponsorships.
The resolution cites that the Hornets attendance at home games has a considerable direct and indirect economic impact on the City and the region. In addition to being an economic boon, the NBA team rallies the spirit of the City and sends a message nationwide that we are a city worthy of having two major professional sports teams.
In a further display of support for the Hornets, Councilmember Fielkow has organized an evening in which over 100 youth from Edgar P. Harney Elementary School will attend a Hornets game. Not only will this field trip increase attendance at the January 19 game against the Memphis Grizzlies, but it also taps into and bolsters the team’s future fan base.
“New Orleans creates binding ties with their sports teams, and the Hornets are no exception. It is critical to our economy and to our city spirit that we keep the team here by showing our unwavering support in attending the games,” said Councilmember Fielkow. “Sports are significant to the development of our children, and youth in New Orleans are fortunate to have outstanding NBA and NFL teams playing downtown. However, not all of our city’s youth have the resources to attend the games. It is my hope that business leaders will support the Hornets by bringing the youth of New Orleans to the Arena.”
