Captain Louie Premieres at the NORD Ty Tracy Theatre

December 30, 2010 – New Orleans, LA – The newly released musical, Captain Louie, by famed composer Stephen Schwartz, opens Friday, January 7 at 7:30 p.m. at the NORD Ty Tracy Theatre in Gallier Hall.  The show, performed by an all-child multi-cultural cast of 15 students from New Orleans, ages 9 to 15, runs for 9 performances through Sunday, January 30.

ABOUT THE STORY: Based on the book, The Trip by Ezra Jack Keats, young Louie feels lonely and without friends in his new neighborhood.   Looking for something to cheer himself up on Halloween Night, Louie returns to his old neighborhood friends in an imaginary journey on the wings of his favorite toy, his little red plane.  The story filled with tricks and treats, and the incomparable music and lyrics of Stephen Schwartz (Wicked, Godspell, Pippin). Most of all, Captain Louie is about friendship — the ability to make new friends and the importance of old ones.

Of its initial production, The New York Times said Captain Louie captures “the sound and rhythm of music that runs through childhood fantasies with a book that conveys the communicative magic of the original story.”

ABOUT THE STAFF: The NORD/CCLYT production staff includes Troy R. Populous, director; Jamani Andrews, choreographer; Julie Condy, music/vocal director; Michael Dixon, scenic designer; Kate Jensen, costume; and Mark Montalbano, lighting designer.  A live band accompanies all performances with Jesse Reeks on piano, Curtis Pierre (Casa Samba) percussion and David Pulphus (bass).

DATES, TIMES AND PLACE: Captain Louie runs from Friday, January 7 through Sunday, January 30 (9 performances only) on Fridays at 7:30 p.m., Saturdays at 1:00 p.m. and Sundays at 3:00 p.m., (No shows from January 14 – 16.)
