September 30, 2010 – New Orleans, LA – Councilman Arnie Fielkow, a strong proponent of the value of organized sports and after-school sports programs, donated $25,000 to the 9th Ward Field of Dreams project to contribute to their goal of raising $1.85 million for a state-of-the art athletic facility on the 9th Ward campus of George Washington Carver High School for the Arts in New Orleans.
The 9th Ward Field of Dreams will house a football field, Olympic-sized running track, stadium seating and lighting system. Organized community sports activities are a proven deterrent to school drop out rates, crime and drug-use. Councilman Fielkow, understanding the value of sports and recreation to youth development, has dedicated much of his time in office to improving sports, cultural and recreational opportunities for all New Orleans youth. The 9WFOD will serve as the springboard for redevelopment of this hurricane-devastated and economically-challenged community.
The 9WFOD project has already raised $1.25 million toward its goal. The multi-purpose facility will be open to the entire community, free of charge. This community space will be the first of its kind in the 9th Ward, and will serve as a model for community-centered athletic facilities across the country.
Present at today’s ceremony will be Ms. Toyia Washington, Principal of Carver High School, Isaac Johnson, RSD Athletic Director, and Brian Bordainick, Carver High School Athletic Director. Carver students and community members will also be present.
